Memorial fund dedicated to DUI baby victim
Citing the need to continually address issues regarding traffic safety, several individuals formed a new non-profit organization called the Baby Pedro Memorial Fund, dedicated to a victim of impaired driving.
The organization aims to facilitate community programs related to traffic; advocate passage of legislation to update and improve current laws; lobby for the passage of stricter penalties for traffic violations; aid in the efforts to decrease or eliminate traffic crash related fatalities and injuries; educate the public, especially foreigners, of the CNMI traffic laws; equip Traffic Section personnel with necessary tools for their field operations; and advocate and assist in the improvement of the driver’s license system and education.
“The duration of the [group] will be indefinite as the Traffic Programs are conducted annually and in conjunction with both national and local organizations,” the organization said.
The group currently consists of 11 members, headed by president Nicolas D. Leon Guerrero, a retired police captain; and vice president Sylvan M. Rangamar, who is currently Traffic Section Operations supervisor with the Department of Public Safety. The group’s secretary, treasurer, and public relations official is Rose T. Ada-Hocog.
Other members include Traffic officer John C. Sablan, firefighters Ian L. Romolor and Steven P. Limes, Traffic Investigation Unit supervisor Joseph A. Flores, and enforcement officer Dave Maratita.
Serving as advisors are Elena M. Guerrero, Assistant Attorney General David W. Hutton, and Traffic Section commander Robert N. Charley.
December was recently declared by Gov. Juan N. Babauta as Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month.
