Preliminary results for the first day of the 2004 Oceania Area Under 18 and Open Athletics Championships are in, and the CNMI representatives have already had a taste of success in Townsville, Australia.

According to Northern Marianas Track and Field Federation developmental coach Elias Rangamar, the team did fairly well overall on the first day of competition, and they were ready for more of the same on Day 2.

In his first race with international competitors, Marcan Aldan ran a personal best in the 5000m with a time of 18:11.00. The youngster from Marianas High School dueled with an athlete from Kiribati for eighth place.

In the sprint category, Ton Ichiou barely missed the semi-finals in the men’s 100-meter Open by one place. Ichiuo finished in fourth place in his heat, and ran his best ever electronically timed sprint with an 11.54. While he has faster finishes to his name, they were all hand-timed.

Jeremy Winkfield finished seventh in the 400-meter sprint in the Under 18 division with a time of 55.48. The MHS senior was hoping for a better result in the one-lap race, and looked to rebound in the 200m yesterday, but the results were unavailable as of press time. Winkfield won’t be stopping there, as he will also compete in his strongest event, the javelin, this afternoon.

Ketson (Jack) Kabriel had a strong event of his own in the 800m on Thursday when he ran his best time in the last year with a 2:10.52. Kabriel and Aldan hoped to do better yesterday in 1500m, but results were not available.

Leiseschangmwar Rangamar finished ninth in the shot put on Thursday when she threw a personal best with a distance of 6.87m. Rangamar was the youngest female in the competition, and she was dwarfed by her fellow fielders. She competed again yesterday in her favorite event, the discus, but she had to do so solo. Teammate Ann Marie Satur suffered an injury to her ankle during practice, and will be unable to compete for the remainder of the meet.
