The Broadway musical hit West Side Story will be coming to town, with students from various schools on Saipan taking on the challenge of retelling this modern day Romeo and Juliet story.

Produced by Thespians of the Western Pacific Islands, the musical that captured the hearts of many since the release of the movie in 1961 is filled with romance, fun, humor, drama, and more.

The show is directed by Saipan Southern High School student Rose Marie Wakit. Performers are from Calvary Christian Academy, Hopwood Junior High School, Kagman High School, Mount Carmel School, Marianas High School, Saipan Community School, and Saipan Southern High School.

Band and choral support is also provided by Saipan Southern students, while technical support is provided by students from Kagman, Saipan Southern, and Marianas high schools. They are also assisted by the MHS Radio Club.

The show features the rivalry between a New York gang, known as the Jets, who grow upset after a new gang of Puerto Ricans, the Sharks, come into their neighborhood.

One of the Jets’ members, Tony, would fall in love with Maria, a young girl who is the sister of the Sharks’ leader, Bernardo. The two fall in love at first sight but are faced with heated reactions from both corners. Their love further stirs the anger of both gangs, resulting in more friction between the two groups.

Show times are Dec. 17 and 18 at 7pm and Dec. 19 at 2pm at the Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe. Tickets are on sale, with students charged $3, adults $5, and $10 for patrons.
