Saipan’s best pool sharks and a handful of cue artists from Tinian have signed up for this weekend’s $1,000 Open 9-Ball Tournament at Top Pool Bar in Garapan.

The watering hole and sports bar’s manager Zheng Jian Qing said he has more than enough players lined up in what could be this year’s biggest purse for a billiards tournament.

In addition, Zheng said four pool players from south of the island have signified their intentions of coming into Saipan and try out their chances against the island’s top guns. He said Saipan players would finally have a chance to play against Tinian talent and vice versa.

The $1,000 Open 9-Ball Tournament kicks off with the elimination phase of the 32-man, single-elimination, race-to-seven billiards competition on Saturday, Dec. 17.

The number of players would be pruned down to eight players when the second phase continues on Sunday, Dec. 18, with Top Pool Bar expected to crown the $1,000 Open 9-Ball Tournament champion shortly before midnight.

Top Pool Bar, one of the newest billiards halls on Saipan, is putting out all the stops in hosting one of the biggest cash prizes for a billiards tournament this side of the Marianas chain in the two-day pool extravaganza.

The Top 3 players get to divide the $1,000 pot. The second runner-up gets to line his pockets with $200, the runner-up goes home with $300, while the champion bags the $500 grand prize.

Entry fee for the $1,000 Open 9-Ball Tournament is $30 per person and pairings will be done through a draw, which will be announced the eve of the tournament.

Top Pool Bar is as spacious as it is modern and boasts of seven 9-1/2-by-5-foot tables usually found in professional tournaments abroad.

Zheng also reminded interested players that early birds get a chance to practice for free on any of Top Pool Bar’s full-size billiard tables an hour before the competition.
