The Marianas High School Japanese Club is currently on a mission to raise enough funds to support 12 students who hope to take part in an annual cultural exchange trip to Japan early next year.

With airfare costing about $650 each, students have been conducting fundraising activities, including hot lunches and a car wash, and have solicited help from companies around the island. Another hot lunch would be held this Saturday at the Civic Center, and a raffle drawing on Dec. 23.

The group, according to club member Carmelita Guiterrez, is expected to leave for Japan on Jan. 5, 2005, and return on Jan. 15. During their stay, they would be hosted by students from Seisa Gakuen High School.

Guiterrez said the trip will serve as an experience of a lifetime as the students would also be given ski lessons while in Hokkaido, as well as a day at Disneyland.

She said individuals or businesses interested in assisting the group may contribute cash donations or prizes for the raffle drawing.

For the past 18 years, students from Seisa Gakuen and Marianas high schools have been involved in the program. The Japanese students, sometimes about 100, would arrive in May and take part in the Marianas High School’s Cultural Day celebration, as well as tour historical sites on the island.
