The Marianas High School National Honor Society had a beach cleanup last Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, from the World Resort area to the Minachom At’dao, with a view toward serving the community.

Although it was a holiday, the National Honor Society members said they were more than willing to serve the community by picking up the trash at the beach side.

Despite the fact that numerous trash cans were placed near every pavilion, there were piles and heaps of party leftovers that could have been thrown in the trash can right beside them.

From this service activity, both the members and the advisers learned important lessons. “We should be more mindful of the environment around us,” said Carmelita Gutierrez, one of the members. Some of the members were surprised and disgusted to see the extent with which people are careless about the environment.

“Keeping our island is our duty and responsibility because we are part of it,” said NHS historian Na Sil Heo.

The National Honor Society has served the community in many different ways and will continue to do so in the future.
