The Department of Public Safety and Customs Division will join forces this holiday season to deter motorists driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

DPS public information officer PO2 Eric F. David said Thursday that Customs Division K-9 units will assist Traffic Section officers conducting sobriety checkpoints scheduled throughout the month.

David also indicated that with the holiday season being a time of the year when many would be celebrating, the DPS would beef up its manpower by tapping into services from school resource police officers, who will assist in various activities.

Meanwhile, the DPS Traffic Section reminds the community of its scheduled checkpoints.

A set of DUI sobriety checkpoints will be held tonight, Dec. 11, with the first conducted on the 2W Chalan Pale Arnold Road in Puerto Rico from 7pm to 8:15pm, and the second from 9pm to 10:15pm on Beach Road Chalan Lau Lau by Triple J Motors.

Sobriety checkpoints will also be conducted on Christmas Eve and early Christmas morning. A checkpoint will be held along Beach Road Chalan Kanoa by the Bargain House from 8pm to 9:15pm and another on 2W Chalan Pale Arnold Road in Chalan Lau Lau by Verizon from 10:15pm to 11:30pm. Both checkpoints will be conducted on Dec. 24.

Another checkpoint will be held on Beach Road Susupe in front of the Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Building from 1:45am to 3am.

DPS also announced that checkpoints will be conducted on New Year’s Eve and early New Year’s morning.

In addition to the checkpoints, the DPS Traffic Section officers will be performing highway criminal interdiction, aggressive driver interdiction, and laser activities.
