The Basketball Association of the Northern Mariana Islands is having some difficulty staging the 35-and-over Masters Basketball League.

BANMI president Mike Muna said the 35-and-over MBL was supposed to kick off last month but the lack of venue to hold the league has been the big problem.

Muna said the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium is pretty much booked from Monday to Saturday, leaving only Sundays as the available schedule for the 35-and-over MBL.

The Ada Gym is utilized by the 2004 Government Basketball League on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, while the 2004-2005 Islandwide Volleyball League stages their games on Tuesday and Thursday.

Since not many teams are sold about playing their games on the Sabbath, BANMI is looking for other venues to stage the 35-and-over MBL.

Muna said BANMI secretary/treasurer Mike White has sent a letter to Northern Marianas College gym manager Tony Satur about the possibility of staging the games there.

The BANMI president said BANMI will sit down with Satur and NMC gym officials in the following days to hammer out a deal that would allow the 35-and-over league to be played at the Fina Sisu sports and recreation facility.

Muna said if all works well in the talks, BANMI would stage the 35-and-over MBL every Tuesday and Thursday at the NMC Gym.

For more information about the 35-and-over MBL, please call Muna at 664-3582, or league coordinator Tony Rogolofoi at 664-2503.

The defending champion of the 35-and-over MBL is Old Aces. The team snapped Verizon’s dynasty in the division in an exciting two-game championship series in August of 2003.

The team was made of finals MVP Tony Luzama, Elias Rangamar, Leo Ruluked, Tony Rogolofoi, Sean Frink, Steve Coleman, Colin Thompson, Joe Untalan of Tinian, Joe “Kamikaze” Camacho, John Salas, Bill Limes, Bob Coldeen, and Tony Olopai.
