Lito Mendoza and Ernie Lopez were hailed champions of the Fil-Taga Golfers Association November Ace Tournament last Nov. 21 at the Marianas Country Club.

Mendoza topped the A Flight after carding a net score of one-under 71, while Lopez dominated B Flight following a superb five-under 67 net score performance.

Mendoza actually finished second to William Retardo in A Flight but took home the plum since the former was not eligible to win, having triumphed in the March edition of the event. For the record, Retardo fired a day’s best six-under 66.

Douglas Puckett and Sen. Pete Reyes finished second and third in the division. Puckett had his swing working all day and scored a par 72, while Reyes was two strokes behind with a 74.

Gil Faler and Joe Miranda round up the Top 5. Faler and Miranda netted identical scores of 75.

Lopez, for his part, was six strokes ahead of runners-up John Camacho and Nono Bostre. Camacho and Bostre finished with identical 73s. Jun “Tiger” Dela Cruz and Henry Bautista were fourth and fifth in B Flight with net scores of 75.

Winners of the monthly tournament in the A and B Flights automatically qualify for the Fil-Taga Golfer of the Year Tournament.

The winners of the Fil-Taga monthly tournament this year are: Ralph Yumul (January) and his father Jess (February), William Retardo (A Flight, March), Ted Malaran (B Flight, March), Harry Kang (A Flight, April), Glenna Palacios (B Flight, April), Albert Pajarillaga (A Flight, May) and Nestor Siruelo (B Flight, May), Joe Miranda (A Flight, June), Father Manny Corcuera (B Flight, June), Rey Ferraz (A Flight, July), Sandy Palon (B Flight, July), Gil Faller (A Flight, August), Domeng Cariaso (B Flight, August), Sen. Pete Reyes (A Flight, September), Edgardo “Puy” Macario (B Flight, August), Jun Calma (A Flight, October), and Tom Aguon (B Flight, October).

Established in 1993, Fil-Taga’s tournaments operate under a computer-controlled handicap system that creates parity among players in the A and B Flights.

A Fil-Taga Ace of the Month champion is crowned monthly. Regular tournaments are scheduled once a month, normally every third Sunday. Green fees are in the $35 to $40 price range for most tournaments.
