No loss for No Fear in IWVBL
No Fear had a close call in their match with the Ol’ Aces on Tuesday night, but they managed to regroup after dropping their first set, and emerged victorious for the second time in two attempts in the continuation of the 2004-2005 Island Wide Volleyball League at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
No Fear (2-0) wasn’t able to take care of business in the first set, as Gabriel White and the fearless six were on the losing end of a 28-26 score that needed to be decided by extra points.
The talented team quickly refocused during the break and took advantage of Ol’ Aces’ mistakes to even the set count at one apiece, 25-18. The crowd became engrossed in the fray, as two of the top teams in the league displayed their talents and determination on the court.
Ultimately, No Fear won the race-to-15 to pick up their second win of the young season, while the Ol’ Aces remain a few bounces shy of first place.
While the undefeated men were busy extending their streak on the north court, the equally unmarred women of Pikan Gaga (3-0) furthered their mark against Haz Been (0-3) on the south court.
Haz Been played one of their most inspiring sets to open the match, but they fell within a whisper of securing the all-important first set when they were edged by the Gaga girls, 26-24.
The second round of bumps, sets and spikes was almost a mirror image of the first for the women, and the result was equally unfortunate for Haz Been. Pikan Gaga picked up their third win of the season after eking out the second set, 25-21.
The men were the first to get the late games underway, as the Managaha Chiefs (2-0) reaffirmed their status among the upper echelon when they sank the Floaters (0-3) in straight sets, 25-21 and 25-11.
Scott Norman, Andy Nepaial, Kaycee Rengaelur, Noky Rogopes, and the Floaters have been very competitive in their three losses, and they will have to find a way to wrench the close games from their opponents if they hope to bridge the gap between them and the top teams.
The Dragons (3-1) of the women’s league don’t share the same problem, as they kept their eye on the prize throughout their contest with Bootylicious (1-2) to sweep the first two sets, 25-18 and 25-19.
With several games remaining in the 2004-2005 season, Aleta Glaze and her team of netters have begun to stake the Dragons’ claim at the top of the league, along side Pikan Gaga and the She Devils (3-1).
All the action of the Island Wide Volleyball League continues tonight at the Ada Gym at 6:30pm.
