Kagman High gets A in canoeing
Teams from all three of the public high schools made their way to Kilili Beach this weekend to take part in the 3rd Annual Christmas in the Marianas Outrigger Canoe Race, but the youth powered proa armada from Kagman High came away from the competition with six Top 3 finishes.
The youngsters proved that last weekend’s event wasn’t just for the adult outrigger enthusiasts, as their oars pierced through the surface of the lagoon with the same intensity of their senior counterparts.
The homesteaders took the top spot in the boy’s division 500-meter sprint race when they passed the flags with a time of 2:24.39. Just behind them were the Dolphins of Marianas High School with a time of 2:48.12, and Saipan Southern High School at 3:03.78.
The Dolphins avenged their loss in the short race with a resounding victory in the 1,500m sprint, as they muscled through the turns to finish with a time of 9:02. Their closest competitor finished 24 seconds behind them, as the crew from Saipan Southern took the two spot, followed by Kagman in third (9:39).
The boys weren’t the only student athletes defending the honor of their alma mater, as they girls showcased their team-working talents in both of the sprints as well.
The Lady Dolphins kept up their end of the bargain, as they were the swiftest of the sculls in the 500m race with a time of 3:34.99. The crew from Kagman 1 poured it on in toward the end of the race to finish second with a time of 3:46.68, while their sister team Kagman 2 took third (4:13.09).
Kagman High roared back in the longer sprint, as the girls from Saipan’s first sunrise finished one-two. Kagman 1 was the first to cross the line of multi-colored flags with a time of 10:50, while Kagman 2 broke the watery plain in 11:16.47. The Lady Dolphins finished in third place with a respectable time of 12:02.67.
