Rudeger: Not just a Notre Dame legend

After a long absence from the mainstream-sporting world in the CNMI, Saipan has recently witnessed the revival of the sport of volleyball.

From the six-on-six action at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium in Island Wide Volleyball League, to the four-on-four on the sand courts of the Pacific Islands Club, the renaissance of the bump, set, and spike is certainly upon Saipan.

In the midst of the “Wilson-esque” resurgence is the return of the BSEA/Rudeger Grass Volleyball Tournament to the American Memorial Park this weekend on Dec. 11 and 12.

Inspired by the under-sized overachiever from South Bend Indiana’s hallowed halls of Notre Dame, the BSEA/Rudeger will feature a mixture of talented players with those who simply love the game.

On Saturday, the top teams in the men’s and women’s doubles will battle it out in the park, followed by a more relaxed round of contests on Sunday, when the co-ed four person portion of the tournament gets under way.

While the teams competing in the doubles category will be entering the tournament with an eye on the title, players in the four-person games on Day 2 will be randomly placed onto a team via draw.

The cost to participate in the BSEA/Rudeger is $25 for the full two-day affair, or $15 to be a part of only one day/tournament. The good news for supporters of the local volleyball scene is that all members of Northern Mariana Islands Volleyball Association will receive a $5 discount.

With the cost of entry, registrants will receive a commemorative T-shirt, drinks, and lots of volleyball. Participants will also have a shot at winning cash prizes and the coveted Rudeger Trophy.

Organizers would like to welcome and encourage all participants to wear costumes for the spirited tournament, and to remind the public that all proceeds from the event will help send the CNMI volleyball players to the 2005 South Pacific Mini Games in Palau.

To register for the event, please contact Jon Cramer by calling 235-6231 extension 5148.
