Pot Luck boat captain William Bradford and anglers Robert Rustin and Matt Albery of Guam were recently commended for capturing third place, wahoo category, at the 20th Annual Saipan International Fishing Tournament.

The 9th Saipan and Northern Islands adopted a resolution praising Bradford and his team for their accomplishment during the tournament that was held in September this year.

Ninety-four boats from Palau, Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan participated in the challenge to catch the winning prizes in each category before the time deadline on Sunday, Sept. 12.

Bradford and his team received $1,000 for placing third in the wahoo category.

“The members of the municipal council and the people of the CNMI join Saipan Fishing Association president John M. San Nicolas and his members in extending special recognition, congratulation and commendation to [the Pot Luck boat team] for their accomplishment] at the fishing tournament and wish them the best as they prepare for the 21st edition of the tournament,” part of the resolution reads.

Other winners in the tournament are Guam’s Charlie Cat boat captain Hoa Van Nguyen and anglers Jesus Curo and Quane Ly, who caught a monster marlin at 519.40 lbs; and Grand V’s boat captain Ray Dela Cruz and anglers Joe Guerrero and Joe Reyes, who caught the biggest/heaviest yellowfin at 55.07 lbs.

Despite these, Danny Agulto’s record in the bill fish category in 1997 at 624.43 lbs and James Taitano’s record in the yellowfin category in 1990 at 106 lbs remained the standing records to break.

The 20th Annual Saipan International Fishing Tournament kicked off on Sept. 11, at Saipan Smiling Cove Marina after being postponed due to supertyphoon Chaba’s devastation.

The resolution was certified by municipal council chair Gregorio V. Deleon Guerrero and vice chair David A. Indalecio and attested by secretary Antonia M. Tudela.
