Into the homestretch
With the end of the year fast approaching, sports associations are bidding adieu to 2004 with a rash of events.
The Saipan Tennis Association, for instance, is rounding out a successful year by celebrating it with the 2nd Annual Taga Tennis Tournament. Over 100 players are expected to suit up in the next two weeks in doubles, singles, and mixed doubles competition.
Over in the sand court at the Pacific Islands Club, Flush It! and Sleezy Lambleezies are lording it over the field with 11-1 and 10-1 win-loss records, respectively, as the 6th Annual Miller 4-Person Beach Volleyball League is nearing a wrap.
One sport that finally ended its year was the 2004 Commonwealth Football League. All roads led to the CPA Airport Field last Nov. 27, which saw the Shell Chiefs cap their undefeated season with a win over upstart Verizon Nitro.
Unlike football, the 2004 Government Basketball League may have to play until early next year to decide their championship. Currently only two teams remain undefeated, as Department of Community and Cultural Affairs and Public School System lead the pack with identical 4-0 marks.
In bowling, Mike Guirey flirted with a perfect game en rout to winning the November Pepsi King of the Lanes Tenpin Bowling Tournament.
Russ Quinn also added a feather in his cap when he won the 20th Annual Mt. Tapochao Turkey Trot Fun Run in the early morning of Nov. 27. Guam also got the better of Saipan in the Shieh Su Ying Junior Golf Championship later in the afternoon.
