The Upward Bound Program at the Rota campus of the Northern Marianas College has increased its enrollment cap from15 to 30 students due to the high demand from high school students.

In 2004, the program graduated 13 Rota High School students: one was the valedictorian, one was the salutatorian, and seven others were in the top ten. Some of these students are now attending college at NMC Rota and the University of Guam.

One student, Jennifer Calamba, attended a six-week summer component at San Diego State University in California sponsored by the Upward Bound Math and Science Programs. Calamba completed the program with a 4.0 G.P.A.

In previous years, Rota Upward Bound has sent students to other participating universities such as University of Hawaii, Monterey Peninsula College, and University of Nevada at Reno.

Since the 1983 inception of the program at NMC- Rota campus, the program has opened many doors of opportunities to students while they are still in high school.

Upward Bound is a college preparatory program that assists high school students overcome educational, social, cultural and other barriers to higher education. It is funded by the U.S. Department of Education through a four-year discretionary grant application by NMC. Upward Bound serves students who come from low-income families without college educations. Here in the CNMI, a majority of high school students are eligible to participate in this program.

The program serves students throughout the high school academic year and during an intensified summer component that includes courses in reading, writing, mathematics, and science.

During the six-week summer program, the students have the opportunity to take core courses for high school credit, the possibility of taking college credit classes, and participate in many field trips and enrichment activities. The program has support activities for students including tutorial services, counseling, advising, mentoring, college campus visits, and workshops for parents and participants.

Upward Bound Program targets students interested in attaining higher education and has proven its effectiveness in improving the lives of participating students.
