‘A rainy week for NMI’
The Emergency Management Office said Saipan, Tinian and Rota would experience intermittent rainshowers during the week, advising motorists and beachgoers to take extra precaution.
This comes even as typhoon Nanmadol spared the Northern Marianas by passing several hundred miles south of Guam.
The typhoon’s closest approach to the Northern Marianas was recorded at about 7am, when Nanmadol was about 544 statute miles and 464 statute miles south-southwest of Saipan and Rota, respectively, according to the EMO. At that time, the typhoon packed 80-mph strong winds.
Heavy rains resulted in several inches of flood in several portions of Saipan, washing away coral debris. These areas included the vicinities of Shell-Dandan, Falapi near the Sugar King Park, Tanapag near the Top Fashion garment factory, and Chalan Kiya. As of yesterday afternoon, though, EMO director Rudolfo Pua said the islands would experience isolated showers until Friday. He said the skies would begin to clear up by Friday.
The EMO maintained high surf and small craft advisories yesterday afternoon, with surf height on Rota waters expected to reach up to 15 feet. Surf heights on Saipan and Tinian were expected to reach up to 12 feet yesterday afternoon, according to the EMO.
“This is a dangerous high surf event. Mariners, beachgoers and residents are strongly advised to avoid venturing near reef lines and exposed beaches due to the high potential for strong rip currents. The most dangerous waves will come infrequently,” the EMO said.
