USS San Francisco returns from deployment

APRA HARBOR—The USS San Francisco (SSN 711) is scheduled to return to its homeport in Apra Harbor today, Dec. 1, after completing a two-month deployment.

This is USS San Francisco’s first operational deployment since arriving on Guam in December 2002.

The Los Angeles-class submarine is designed to seek and destroy enemy submarines and surface ships. Its other missions range from intelligence collection and Special Forces delivery, to strike warfare using Tomahawk cruise missiles.

USS San Francisco is the second of three submarines to be homeported in Guam as part of Commander, Submarine Squadron 15. USS City of Corpus Christi (SSN 705) arrived on island October 2002. The USS Houston (SSN 713) is expected to arrive in December.

USS San Francisco’s crew is composed of 17 officers and 126 sailors.
