Plea, candle light march, mini fair kick off 3D month
The campaign versus driving while intoxicated intensifies this month, with the declaration of December as Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month. A proclamation ceremony was held for this purpose at 10:30am at the Governor’s Office yesterday.
3D vice chair Rose Ada-Hocog said that activities will begin on Dec. 10, with a Road Side Plea along Beach Road and a mini-fair at the Garapan Fishing Base. The plea, scheduled to being at 5pm, would be followed by a candle light march, known as the Stride For Life, along the Beach Road Pathway to the Fishing Base.
Invitations have already been sent to various schools for students to participate.
Family members of victims of drunk driving are also urged to contact the Department of Public Safety Traffic Section as the fair would include a ceremony featuring the Tree of Life, to which family members would place an ornament representing the victim.
Ada-Hocog said the 3D committee is currently looking for entertainers during the fair. “We’re in search for a variety of entertainment that would also include the Christmas spirit,” she said.
Interested bands and dance groups may contact the Traffic Section at 664-9084/5.
Other activities include Santa Claus visits to schools, as well as informative and educational presentations related to drunk driving prevention.
Individuals or businesses interested in assisting the Santa Claus program may donate candies, which would be distributed to students.
In related news, the Tanapag Elementary School family took part in the Road Side Plea program and sent out messages against drunk driving in front of the school campus at 5pm yesterday.
Throughout the past two weeks, several other schools have voiced their support against driving when intoxicated, citing the importance of having a safe environment to enjoy the holiday season.
The 3D campaign also recently kicked off its Designated Drivers program. It features 52 volunteers who will assist the community in transporting intoxicated individuals home.
Individuals seeking the program’s assistance must contact DPS Central Office at 664-9001/2.
