A company distributing liquefied petroleum gas raised an alarm over the local proliferation of LPG cylinders that are allegedly not compliant with federal safety rules, saying that the presence of those equipment in many homes poses risk to public safety.

Saipan Industrial Gas, Inc. brought this matter up to the Department of Public Safety.

Police sergeant Jerry Ayuyu, Motor Carrier Section’s officer-in-charge for the DPS’ Office of Grants and Special Programs, said the matter is being looked at.

“Any complaint that comes to me regardless of whose company it is from will be addressed,” Ayuyu said. He refused to elaborate, referring an interview to the DPS’ public information office for further inquiries.

Saipan Industrial Gas president Dionisio Lopez said scores of non-compliant LPG cylinders might be out in the homes and pose risk to the consumers’ safety.

He accused business rival Wushin Corp. of distributing LPG using non-compliant cylinders. DL Corp. also retails Wushin’s products, Lopez said.

Lopez said Wushin continues to use its cylinders despite an agreement with Saipan Gas to comply with federal and local requirements.

Based on the agreement entered into by Saipan Gas and its retailer C-Gas between Wushin and DL Corp., each camp would return the cylinders where they appropriately belong by Oct. 31, instead of refilling the other camp’s cylinders. Lopez said Wushin has failed to comply with the agreement.

Designated color for Saipan Industrial Gas and C-Gas’ cylinders is yellow, while that of Wushin and DL Corp. is blue, according to Lopez. Empty cylinders, however, could be sold, based on the agreement.

Wushin and DL Corp. could not be reached for comment as of press time.
