Nearly $12.7M approved in disaster assistance for NMI
More than 174 residents of the Northern Mariana Islands called to apply for disaster assistance on the final week that the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s toll-free number was available to accept applications. Nearly $12.7 million in state and federal assistance has already been approved for more than 5,549 claims from residents who were affected by Supertyphoon Chaba.
Federal and state disaster officials offer the following 60-day summary of assistance efforts to date:
* 5,549 individuals fron Saipan, Rota and Tinian have applied for federal and state assistance;
* $12,686,076 approved in grants and low-interest loans;
* $8,488,692 approved in Housing Assistance grants for temporary rental assistance and minimal home repairs;
* $4,193,383 approved in Other Needs Assistance grants for necessary expenses and serious needs caused by the disaster; and
* $5,324,700 approved in U.S. Small Business Administration in low-interest loans, including 157 home loans ($4,806,500) and eight business loans ($427,700).
