North Stars smash Kautz Glass in dramatic fashion
With the score knotted up at three runs apiece, Johnson Jones hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to drive in Johnty Jones from third base to win the game as the North Stars knocked off the Glazers 4-3 in continuation of the fall edition of the Saipan Major League Saturday at the Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field.
Johnson Jones was walked to lead off the ninth inning, stole second, and advanced to third courtesy of a wild pitch to set up the finish. Neither of the Joneses recorded a hit on any of the Glazers’ pitchers, but the timing was just right for the walk off sac fly.
The Glazers got the scoring started in the second inning when Dirk Mag-Atas brought McGregory Camacho home with a double. Mag-Atas later advanced to third base and crossed the plate courtesy of North Stars throwing errors.
Tyrone Omar smacked a triple to lead off the fifth inning for the Glazers, and they tacked on another run when Anthony Palacios hit a sac fly to right field. With a 3-0 head start on the North Stars and a solid performance from pitchers Tony Palacios and Darson Camacho, the Kautz Glass squad was in a pretty good position.
Things began to unravel for the Glazers in the sixth inning, as Stars’ Clifton Sillil and Robert Bansil made it all the way to home. While Camacho would get out of the inning without allowing any further damage, he was relieved in favor of McGregory Camacho to start the seventh.
The pitching change didn’t phase the Stars, as they tied the game in the seventh when Jesse Jones courtesy of another Glazer throwing error. Neither team scored in the eighth inning, and Shane Mendiola was able to retire the Glazers 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth before the Joneses performed their late game heroics.
The smacks and cracks of the wooden bats returns to Francisco M. Palacios field this Saturday and Sunday, as the Hustlers face the Pirates at 10am, The action continues at 2pm, when the Glazers and the North Stars meet in a rematch on Saturday, Nov. 6.
Baseball fans will be pleased to know that the make up games from the Oct. 16 rain-out between the Hustlers and Stars will be played this Sunday, Nov. 7 at 10am, followed by the Glazers and Pirates at 2pm.
