Only tents to be allowed in beach concessions
The Coastal Resources Management Office and the Marianas Public Lands Authority will implement regulations governing marine sports operators, which would allow them to install only removable tent structures at beach concessions.
CRMO director Joaquin D. Salas disclosed this in an enforcement notice issued to a marine sports operator, amid complaints against “shobai” activities, the overly aggressive solicitation of services by watersports operators or agents.
“CRMO and MPLA will be adopting standards uniformly that will govern the marine sports industry in the CNMI… One of the standards will be to require all marine sports concessions to only place tent structures that will be removed at the end of each day,” Salas said.
Salas issued an enforcement notice against Saipan Trolling Co., directing the watersports company to remove certain improvements it had installed at a beach concession.
The CRMO ordered the company to remove the fiberglass water tank behind its concession booth, the generator house, and an outdoor cabinet.
Salas said CRMO staff discovered the improvements at the concession when they arrived at the site to meet with MPLA representatives last Aug. 17.
“Upon arrival at the site, CRMO staff discovered that you had constructed a bar counter, enclosed two sides of your beach concession booth with corrugated tin walls, placed a wooden planking flooring and had built overhangs extending out approximately four feet on three sides of your concession booth,” Salas said.
He said the improvements were made without prior consultation with the CRMO.
The CRMO director threatened the company of monetary fines if it does not remove the structures as directed. (John Ravelo)
