GCA students put minds to science
Students at Grace Christian Academy had their science thinking hats on for the past month, preparing for the school’s two-day annual Science Fair, which took place this Thursday and Friday.
In all, about 200 projects, 48 from the junior high and high school levels, were submitted for judging from students between kindergarten and 12th grade. Students from each grade level had designated times for evaluating each project.
“It took about a week or two to complete our project,” said Joshua Borja, a 6th grade student who, along with classmates Marty Mendez and Andy Tse, tested the effect water may have on an object if enough water pressure is applied. “I would go fishing with my dad, and I’ve always wanted to learn more about water. So I learned a lot, even from looking at the other projects.”
Another project, this time by Olivia Leung and Clara Dela Cruz, highlighted the effect of air taking up space.
“We wanted to know what air can do, and we found out that it does take up space. If there’s air in a bottle, and you try to force water in, it wouldn’t go in if the air does not come out,” Dela Cruz said.
Event coordinator Leah Dalusung, a teacher at the institution, commended the students for “all their hard work” and reiterated the importance of providing a venue for students to explore the subject.
“The students all worked very hard and did a good job,” she said. “They learned a lot about science, and this kind of event helps them build up interest in science. Hopefully, in the future, the students will be able to invent something that will benefit everyone. They would apply what they’ve learned here.”
