The Palau Consulate Office announced yesterday that Palau Election Commission staff are scheduled to arrive today and will hold an important meeting with the Palauan community on Saipan to address various concerns related to this Saturday’s general election.

Palau Consul Eileen Kintol said the meeting will begin at 7pm tomorrow evening at the Minachom Atdao Pavilion in Susupe.

“Anyone interested can join this meeting,” she said. “This is important because the election commission will talk about several things, including the Palauan laws on election.”

Kintol said Palau law for election requires that no endorsement activities occur within 500 feet of the poll area.

“They do that during election in Palau, and because this is a Palauan election, we have to do it here also,” she said.

Kintol said the commission staff would also arrange a meeting with candidate representatives regarding poll monitoring. Each candidate is allowed one representative to monitor the polls.

About 600 of the 12,922 Palau voters reside on Saipan.

Voters may cast votes between 7am and 9pm at the Marianas High School Building J. Voters, however, will not be able to enter the facility through its main entrance. Instead, Kintol said entrance to the polling area will be through the northern entrance of the school, beside the Sun Palace Hotel.

Motorists are urged to park their vehicles at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium parking lot and walk to the polling place.

Upon completion of the election, the poll box would be taken to Palau, where all votes will be counted after the Nov. 2 election.

The election follows the primary presidential election, which featured incumbent President Tommy Remengesau and Polycorp Basilius garnering enough votes to advance to the general elections.

Ballots will also include other seats as well as amendments to the Palau Constitution.

Aside from Saipan, Guam and Honolulu are the only other areas that the commission granted a poll box. Other voters may cast votes through absentee ballots.
