Tennis matches rained out Sunday
The 2004 Shell-Telesource Open would have to extend to a third week after foul weather scratched Sunday’s entire schedule and more than half of the matches last Saturday at the American Memorial Park tennis courts.
A total of only four matches were completed during the weekend. In the men’s open, No. 2 seed Jeff Race didn’t give Ed Johnson much of a chance, conducting a tennis clinic in his 6-0, 6-0 win to advance to the next round.
Jun Villanueva is also safely into the next round of the elite division, beating men’s 4.5 doubles partner Ji Hoon Heo in a score of 6-2, 7-6 (7-2). Third seed Daniel Son also didn’t have much trouble disposing off junior netter Ralph Buenavantura 6-2, 6-3.
Second seeded Reo and Mayuko Arriola are also off to a great start in the mixed open doubles, after the brother-sister team topped Sally Wong and Kaith 6-4, 7-5.
In related news, Massimo Flouti clarified that a previous Saipan Tribune report quoting him as saying that he felt embarrassed after losing to Kanani Ashraf in their men’s 3.0 match was incorrect. He claims that he said no such thing. Flouti also clarified that he is not French but is American.
Filipino-American Tennis Association president Eli Buenaventura also said that because of the cancellation of a number of weekend matches and the continued unpredictable weather, players seeing action in the singles and mixed doubles divisions should check their schedules for updates from time to time.
