2 NMC students awarded scholarships
Current Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society students of the Northern Marianas College were inspired upon receiving news that two former NMC PTK honor students were awarded scholarships to continue their education in the United States.
Jin Am Seo, who is pursuing his education at Syracuse University in New York State after graduating from NMA and NMC in May 2004, received a PTK scholarship valued at $2,000. Another former NMC student and the PTK recording secretary for Beta Lambda Psi chapter, Catherine Cepeda, who is studying for a bachelor’s degree in Nursing at Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu, obtained a PTK scholarship amounting to a hefty 50 percent tuition waiver.
Over $35 million is available to PTK members only at over 600 higher education institutions in all 50 states.
“These teaches us that there is no such thing as impossible, only possibilities. Indeed, if you are high school or college student, or you know one personally, take it from Seo and Cathy about the awesome advantages of being a member of Phi Theta Kappa member,” the group said in a statement.
The group said that many college and most high school students do not realize what opportunities this prestigious honor society has to offer.
“Being a member opens doors to fun activities with other members while at NMC and to scholarship opportunities if you transfer, and makes you look good when you apply for future employment. Most importantly, being a member provides motivation to maintain that high grade point average, to be eligible to participate in various community projects, to develop a sense of fellowship among members and to be noticed for your leadership abilities,” the statement adds.
Since its first induction ceremony in April 2003, Northern Marianas Colleges local chapter Beta Lambda Psi has welcomed and inducted almost 100 local and international students into PTK. It is the largest collegiate honor society at the college, with chapters in the United States, Canada and Japan.
