Saturday was a busy day for the Saipan Mayor’s Office
For Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela and some of his staff, Saturday is just another ordinary workday.
Frustrated by all the old, broken-down, always-under-repair heavy equipment he inherited from past mayors, Tudela recently turned to the Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation for help. And he got immediate results.
Last Oct. 16, Mayor Tudela and his staff arrived with rented trucks and backhoes paid for by the Saipan Delegation, and took on 10 separate projects from Chinatown to Kagman.
The biggest challenge of the day was filling-in a 12-feet by 10-feet gaping hole that was torn into the main road by torrential typhoon rains recently in upper Garapan’s Chinatown area.
According to field supervisor George Camacho, a broken gutter further up the main road caused the destruction of the paved road below.
He said three other typhoon-rain related repairs were also completed in Chinatown on Saturday, mostly repairing washed-out residential roads and clearing Garapan’s Sugar King Park of coral and rocks that the heavy rains brought to the area.
In San Antonio’s Afetna area and in Dandan, loads of coral were delivered for several customary novena parties, and in Kagman’s farming area several loads of coral were delivered for access road repairs.
In San Vicente, across from the baseball field, extensive repairs were made to the road up the hill to mitigate flooding near the lower school area. Mayor Tudela said a long-range solution, which includes an extensive drainage system, is needed to solve this chronic flooding problem in the elementary school area.
Funding for the rented heavy equipment were part of Saipan Local No. 14-10 which gave Mayor Tudela $200,000 for equipment rentals. The measure became law just one day earlier on Friday, October 15, 2004. (PR)
