DPS to hold appreciation ceremony for Camacho
Department of Public Safety commissioner Edward Camacho will officially bid farewell to his current post during an appreciation ceremony Monday afternoon at the Police Academy classroom, according to DPS.
DPS public information officer PO2 Eric David disclosed Friday that Camacho will address the department during the ceremony, which will be attended by other commanding officers, DPS management, as well as Gov. Juan N. Babauta.
Camacho recently disclosed that he would resign as commissioner effective this Monday. He was appointed to the position two years ago in January 2002. He was confirmed a month later, sworn-in in March, and was officially released from Army Active status in May before assuming full duties as commissioner on June 1.
A major in the U.S. Army, Camacho said he made his decision to resign while visiting the local Army Reserve troops during a recent visit to Hawaii.
Camacho informed Gov. Juan N. Babauta of his decision, and on Friday, addressed DPS officials.
He assured, though, that despite resigning from his post, he would continue to assist in the efforts the department is undertaking to benefit the department and its services to the community.
“My heart is always part of the department,” he said. “I want to continue to assist toward getting the DPS accredited [by the Commission Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies], building more preserve and National Guard opportunities, as well as other operations that would benefit the department. I want the department to succeed, and even though I’m not commissioner, I would still assist.”
