NMC students to host mock presidential debate today
Organizers of the mock presidential election at the Northern Marianas College will be hosting a debate among the “candidates” today at the college.
NMC political science class instructor Sam McPhetres said the debate—which is open to the public—will be held in room D1 on Oct. 23, from 5pm to 7pm.
Gov. Juan N. Babauta will be representing the Republican Party and President Bush, while NMC’s own Danny Wyatt will represent Sen. John Kerry and the Democrats. Gregorio Sablan will represent Ralph Nader and the Reform Party.
“Everyone on Saipan is invited to attend this presidential style debate,” said McPhetres.
The simulated presidential election itself will be held next Saturday, Oct. 30, throughout the Commonwealth.
Presidential voting in the simulated election will be held from 8am to 7pm. On Rota, it will be held at Room H2 on campus; on Tinian, at the community gym; and Saipan, at the community room of the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library. All persons registered in the Commonwealth as of Sept. 12 this year will be eligible to vote.
On Saipan, a special box will be set aside for unregistered but otherwise qualified voters to cast their votes, which will be counted separately.
Counting will commence as soon as the polls are closed and the results will be publicized immediately.
This project is being sponsored by the Northern Marianas College political science class PS 110 and carried out by the students at all three campuses.
