After typhoon Chaba left the NMI in tatters in its wake, the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs staff at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium in Oleai put their regular job descriptions on hold and quickly adapted to house and care for the masses who were left homeless.

The walls of the gym will once again be filled with the sounds of voices and the rustling of papers as a need for a large space was created with the recent federal allocation for employment by the National Emergency Grant.

According to Tony Rogolifoi of the DCCA, all daytime activities at the gym will be suspended beginning next Monday, Oct. 25, through the Friday, Oct. 29 between the hours of 8am and 5pm to allow for the processing of the prospective employees.

“We’re giving way to the National Emergency Grant so that they can take care of all their paper work,” said Rogolifoi.

Those wishing to utilize the facility’s weight room may still do so; however, members are asked to use the door to the rear of the building so as not to disturb the NEG’s operation.

The gym will continue to be available as scheduled for all of the events slated for the evening.

In a related story, due to the completion of the local basketball leagues, there will be an “Open Gym” on Tuesday and Thursday evening next week. There is no charge, and the public is invited to make use of the facility.
