Yellow boat captain Antonio Mostro and his angler, Dumingo Lubteb, as well as Kuiipo boat captain Paul Roberto and his anglers, Max Roberto and Ed Cabrera, were recently commended for outstanding performances during the the 20th Annual Saipan International Fishing Tournament.

Mostro and Lubteb were praised for capturing first place, Wahoo Category, at the tournament, while Paul and Max Roberto and Ed Cabrera were lauded for capturing second place, Mahi Mahi Category.

The 8th Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council adopted separate resolutions praising the two groups for their accomplishment.

“The members of the municipal council and the people of the CNMI join John M. San Nicolas, president, and his Saipan Fishing Association members in extending special recognition, congratulation and commendation to [Mostro, Lubteb, the Robertos and Cabrera]…and wish them the best as they prepare for the 21st Annual Saipan International Fishing Tournament.

This year’s edition of the international fishing tournament kicked off on Sept. 11 at Saipan Smiling Cove Marina after being postponed due to Supertyphoon Chaba’s devastating effect in the CNMI.

Some 94 boats from Palau, Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan participated in the challenge to catch the winning prizes in each category before the time deadline on Sept. 12.

Danny Agulto’s record in the Bill Fish Category in 1997 at 624.43 lbs, and James Taitano’s record in the Yellowfin Category in 1990 at 106 lbs remained the standing records to break.

Guam Charlie Cat boat captain Dr. Hoa Van Nguyen and anglers, Jesus Curo and Quane Ly caught a monster marlin at 519.40 lbs; and Grand V’s boat captain Ray Dela Cruz and anglers Joe Guerrero and Joe Reyes caught the biggest/heaviest yellowfin at 55.07 lbs.

Mostro and Lubteb captured first place, Wahoo Category, the Speaker’s Cup and $2,500.00 cash.

Paul and Max Roberto and Cabrera captured second place, Mahi Mahi Category, winning for themselves the $1,500.00 cash prize.

The resolution was certified by chair Gregorio V. Deleon Guerrero and vice chair David A. Indalecio and attested by Antonia M. Tudela.
