MATTA confirms date of goodwill tourney
The Marianas Amateur Table Tennis Association will hold a goodwill tournament that will bring together the best ping-pong players from Guam, Tinian and Saipan under one roof at the end of this month.
MATTA president Steven Lim said the second leg of the 2004 Marianas Friendship Table Tennis Tournament would take place on Oct. 30 and 31 from 9am to 3pm at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Representing Tinian is a team from the Tinian Dynasty Hotel and Casino, while Guam will be sending players from the Guam Table Tennis Association. Players from host MATTA will be representing Saipan in the three-island ping-pong competition.
Lim said a round-robin format would be used for the two-day event. “Each team will have their players play a game against each of the players on the opposing teams,” said Lim.
The MATTA president also said that originally the number of players was set at five per team, but Tinian and Guam requested that the number of players in the roster be increased to seven players.
“This change will mean a minimum of 75 singles matches played over two days. The team whose players have the highest cumulative win total will be the winner of the tournament,” said Lim.
The year’s first Marianas Friendship Table Tennis Tournament only featured players from Saipan and Tinian with the middle island of the Northern Marianas chain coming up with the overall championship.
Lim said it has been years since Saipan hosted a table tennis team from Guam and since the sport has grown leaps and bounds on Tinian, he is looking forward to a pretty interesting goodwill series at the end of this month.
