Proa pounds the homesteaders, 22-0
It was as easy as 1-2-3 on Tuesday night, as the pummeling powers of Proa blanked their opponents from Kagman on the strength of pitcher Tony Satur’s four-hit shutout and a nine-run ninth inning in continuation of the Men’s Island-Wide Fast Pitch Softball League at the Oleai Sports Complex.
The imposing Satur is the Randy Johnson of Saipan’s fast-pitch league, and he dominated Kagman 1-2-3 hitters by fanning six not allowing them to make quality contact with his underhanded lasers.
As good as Satur was, Proa would not have been able to win had they not been able to score a run. That was not a problem for the heavy hitters, as they scored all the runs that they needed in the first inning when Eric Lizama scored off a past ball to give Proa a 1-0 lead.
The rest was gravy for Proa as they added another 21 runs off of 18 hits over four innings of play while Satur kept sending Kagman 1-2-3 hitters back to their dugout. The Proa offense generated two runs in the first inning, nine in the second, four in the third, and seven more in the fourth before the game was called in the middle of the fifth inning via the league’s 10-run mercy rule.
Manny Sablan caught all of Satur’s fire behind the plate, but it was his offense that made him a standout in the game.
Sablan went 4-for-4 with the stick with a sacrifice fly, a single, a triple, and a second-inning grand salami. The “Pudge” of Proa racked up six runs batted in for Proa and scored three times to boot.
Designated hitter Jason Gaye also came up big for Proa at the plate, going 3-for-4, racking up a pair of singles, a three-run dinger, scoring three runs, and collecting four ribbies.
Even the eighth batter in the lineup cranked a homer, as John Paul Flores went yard in the fourth inning. Flores had a solid night as well, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a single, a triple, and the solo shot for a pair of runs batted in.
All of the action of fastpitch softball continues tonight, as the underhanded rocket launchers get underway at 6pm at the Oleai Sports Complex.
