Tinian High School joins MY WAVE clubs
Tinian Junior and Senior High School has joined the MY WAVE tourism clubs and continues to expand its membership among the school’s students, the Marianas Tourism Education Council said.
“I had such a huge response,” said MY WAVE adviser Leila Clark of the first meeting held last month. “More had come to me saying they couldn’t come, because they had another meeting to attend but they were interested.”
Regular meetings had been held since and Clark said that “every time we have a meeting, we get at least three new members in attendance.”
Clark is being helped by Mark Mendiola, who used to work for the Boy Scouts of America on Guam as director.
Clark said the Tinian High School MY WAVE Club meets after school every Tuesday, and has decided to hold monthly beach cleanups, the second of which was done last Saturday.
Clark said Tinian MY WAVErs have the support of the Marianas Visitors Authority, and municipal officials including Ray Dela Cruz of the Tinian Mayor’s Office’s promotions department, who also sits on the MTEC board, and James Mendiola, director of the Tinian Municipal Council.
“We are still fledglings and are working on our student base and strategy for gathering support,” said Clark, adding that she has been learning a few things from Mendiola who is very knowledgeable about garnering support and funding.
Tinian Junior and Senior High School brought to 18 the total number of public schools that have MY WAVE tourism club chapters. Earlier this month, three other schools joined the MY WAVE tourism club, Kagman High School, and San Antonio and Tanapag Elementary Schools.
The MY WAVE tourism clubs were formed in 2002 by MTEC and the Public School System to foster community understanding and support for the visitor industry, and educate the people on the values of tourism in the CNMI.
There are over 400 MY WAVE tourism club members to date, and there are plans by MTEC to further expand membership to the private schools.
