Doubles play winding down
While the sun no longer made just cameo appearances at the American Memorial Park tennis courts, it was the turn of electricity—or lack of it—that plagued organizers of the 2004 Shell-Telesource Open last Saturday.
Despite prolonged brownouts and occasional rain showers, the Filipino-American Tennis Association still managed to finish six matches the highlight of which was the win by the Commonwealth Health Center pair of Richard Brostrom and Gary Ramsey.
Team CHC finally barged into its first men’s 3.0 finals, guaranteeing Brostrom and Ramsey their first trophy, after hurdling the pair of Romy Sotto and Ruben Leynes 6-4, 6-2.
Next up for the doctors with racquets is the winner of the match between the twosome of Hector Benutez and Hiob and the immaculate duo of Father Ryan Jimenez and Robert Michael.
In the men’s 4.5 division, top seeds Jun Villanueva and Ji Hoon Heo debuted with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Renato “Dodong” Espanola and Edwin Maratas.
Villanueva and Heo will play for the championship against the No. 2 team of Dino Jones and Roy Pangelinan. Jones and Pangelinan reached the finals after outlasting Hector Gutierrez and Boyet Minor 7-5, 6-4.
The lone men’ s open match Saturday saw the father-and-son tandem of Eli and Ralph Buenaventura play beautiful music together in thumping Minor and Nicolas Son 6-2, 7-6 (7-1).
The finals cast in the women’s open was also decided Saturday. Top seeds Kazumi Imai and Yuko Kobayashi advanced to the championship after waylaying teenage phenoms Kanani Ashraf and Vivian Lee 6-2, 7-5.
Joining them in the finals is the pair of Young Son and Letty Jones, who defeated the two Sallys – Sally Wong and Sally Cacdac—in a score of 6-4, 6-0.
