Inmate allegedly assaults DOC officer for betel nut
Police responded to the Division of Corrections facility early Thursday morning after receiving a report that an inmate allegedly assaulted a DOC officer, according to the Department of Public Safety.
DPS public information officer Eric F. David disclosed yesterday that 22-year-old Isaen Nepios Bokuku allegedly grabbed 20-year-old DOC officer Edward Dela Cruz’s shirt and threatened to “beat him up.”
David said responding officers indicated in a preliminary investigation report that at 12:36am, Bokuku asked Dela Cruz if he had any betel nut. The officer replied that he did not have any, after which the inmate requested for water.
“[So] the officer opened the cell door to give the cup of water when Mr. Bokuku grabbed the officer by the front of his shirt and told him to give him pugua [betel nut] or else he was going to beat him up,” David said.
David said the officer managed to get away from the inmate and secure Bokuku in his cell. The officer was not injured during the encounter.
The officer then met with his supervisor and reported the incident.
David said Sgt. Joseph Pangelinan of DOC then called DPS at 1:40am, reporting an assault and battery incident. (Shan Seman)
