Three teams advance to second round

Three teams are in and three are out after the first day of competition in the 2004 Shell-Telesource Open that kicked off Tuesday evening at the American Memorial Park tennis courts.

All three matches played in the men’s 4.0 doubles went the distance with the duo of Father Ryan Jimenez and Perry Cacdac getting the tourney’s first win, when they fashioned out a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 humbling of the team of Didith Julve and Manny Po.

Also moving on to the second round was the pair of Martin Igitol and Buddy Garote, which waylaid the tandem of Jaime Hagos and Hector Benitez in a score of 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.

Dr. Bert Ventura and Roger De Villa were also able to tuck a win but not after a dogfight with the May-September team of Ed Johnson and Russell Buenaventura. Ventura and De Villa won in a score of 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.

In his speech to open the tournament earlier in the evening, Filipino-American Tennis Association president Eli Buenaventura wished all the participants good luck and hoped that the spirit of sportsmanship prevail the next couple of weeks.

Shell Marianas retail area manager Jeff Boyer also graced the opening of the tournament sponsored jointly by Shell and Telesource CNMI.

He said his company is very pleased to once again be a part of the tennis event and noted that he was happy that notable players have signed up for the competition. Boyer said Shell is always open to supporting community and sports events.

The Shell-Telesource Open starts with doubles play this week before concluding with competition in the singles and mixed doubles divisions next week. Over a 100 entries are expected for the tournament.

Play in the second round of the men’s 4.0 and the start of men’s 3.0 were being played as of press time. FILATA will continue with the third round of men’s 4.0, the second round of men’s 3.0, and the start of men’s 4.5 today. Women participants and players in the men’s open start their matches tomorrow.
