The training, conducted in partnership with the State Rehabilitation Council, will be held on Oct. 26 and 27 from 8am to 4:30pm at the Aqua Resort Club.
According to the OVR, topics covered during the training include ABE Program and Services, Accessible and Affordable Housing, Assistive Technology in the Workplace, Benefits Planning Assistance and Outreach, Employment Services, Hearing Loss, Low Vision, NMC-COMPASS-Community Development Institute Programs, NMC Disability Support Services, Special Education and Transition Services, Traumatic Brain Injury, and WIA and OVR Collaboration.
OVR urges interested individuals to register early as seats for the training are limited. Registration ends on Oct. 22.
The event is part of OVR’s efforts to increase public awareness about the benefits of hiring qualified individuals with disabilities.
Other activities include awarding of the employer of the year on Oct. 29, success stories and counselor feature stories published through local newspapers, and commercials, among others.
National Disability Employment Awareness Month was expanded from a one-week awareness period to a month-long period in 1988 by the U.S. Congress. Prior to the change, the first week of October was annually proclaimed as National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week, beginning in 1945. The word physically was removed in 1962 to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities.
