The Department of Public Safety Traffic Section announced yesterday that it would hold two sobriety checkpoints this Saturday, Oct. 16.

According to the Traffic Section, the activity is part of its efforts to deter and detect drunk drivers, as well as ensure that all vehicle occupants are protected.

The first setup will be on Beach Road Chalan Piao in front of the Hopwood Junior High School from 7pm to 8:15pm. The checkpoint will be conducted for vehicles traveling on the southbound lanes.

The second setup will be on Monsignor Martinez Road in front of the JTV Building and will be set up for motorists traveling on the eastbound lane. Operation will begin at 9pm and conclude a 10:15pm.

The Traffic Section also indicated that officers will be performing highway criminal interdiction, aggressive driver interdiction, and laser activities.

Traffic Section is required to conduct a minimum of 12 sobriety checkpoints a year.

Statistics provided by the Traffic Section indicate that 254 DUI arrests were made in the first nine months this year, majority of which involved males.
