The girls of William S. Reyes Elementary School brought out the big broom in last Saturday’s preliminary round of the 2004 DFS Cup Soccer Tournament at the Garapan Elementary School field.

WSR swept all three games and wound up as the top seed in Group B. They started if off with a 2-0 shutout of Gregorio T. Camacho on goals by Lynae Cabrera and Wang Yue.

In their next assignment, WSR got two goals apiece from Cabrera and Megan Castro as they scored a 4-0 whipping of Kagman. In their third and final game, WSR proved even better, routing GES II, 6-0, as Yue kicked the ball between the goal posts five times and Castro added one more for insurance.

GTC finished behind WSR in Group B with 4 points and also advanced to the championship round with victories over GES II and Kagman.

Putting their shutout loss to WSR behind them, GTC rebounded with a 3-2 nipping of GES II, as Zerah Castro (2) and Katrina Norita (1) scored. GTC then threw everything but the kitchen sink in their 4-0 thumping of Kagman. Charing Reyes and Loni Cruz, this time, joined Castro and Norita, in the goals column.

GES II and Kagman finished the elimination round on the outside looking in and missed the postseason bus after coming up with just a single point each.

In Group A, Tinian topped the four-team field after accumulating 5 points built on a record of two wins and a draw.

Dandan proved to be a major headache for the girls from the south, as they managed to pull off a 0-0 tie with Tinian after regulation. Tinian also had trouble in their next game against Koblerville and luckily escaped with a 1-0 win after a Jennifer Cruz goal. It was the same score in Tinian’s match against GES I with Nikki Cepeda bailing them out with the game’s lone goal.

Also advancing together with Tinian in the championship round is Dandan with 4 points. The girls from Dandan started their elimination round campaign with two straight ties after also finishing deadlocked with GES 1 in their opener. Dandan then escaped Koblerville by the skin of their teeth, 2-1, as Jonah Santos and Rita Deleon Guerrero got the better of Koblerville’s goalee.

GES I and Koblerville failed to reach the playoff round with 3 and no points, respectively. Incidentally, GES I beat Koblerville in their early morning game, 1-0, on a goal by Colleen Sablan.

The girls soccer tournament resumes on Oct. 23 with Tinian taking on GTC in the first match to be followed by the encounter between WSR and Dandan. Winner of both games advanced to the finals with the losers relegated to the battle for third.

This Saturday, the playoffs round for the boys division gets going with Tinian and WSR squaring off in the 8am first game. The second game then pits GTC versus GES I.

Organizers of the 2004 DFS Cup Soccer Tournament would also like to thank referees Yun Dae Young, Vince Riley, Kim Sung In, Dale Roberts, and Cho Hong Koo for donating their time and expertise to promote soccer in the CNMI.
