Ol’Aces, 69ers I take care of business
Ol’Aces primed up for its anticipated clash with Makos, while 69ers I ended its elimination campaign in a high note Thursday in the 2004 Saipan Rotary Club Summer Youth Basketball League at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
The defending champions drew Sixers II (7-4) in their second to the last game and made most of the practice session. Last year’s MVP Dan Barcinas went on a scoring spree in the first half to lift Ol’Aces (6-4) to a 12-point advantage.
Rayner Ferrer tried his best to dig his team out of the deep hole but it was not enough as Barcinas joined hands with Marcan Aldan and Kovin Ogumoro to slam the door shut on Sixers II.
Barcinas played a heck of ballgame, totaling 26 points, 9 steals, and 8 blocks. Aldan backed him up with 17 markers, while Ogumoro and Jeff Deleon Guerrero added 12 apiece.
Ferrer was the highpoint man for Sixers II with 13 points. James Kintz fired 10 and grabbed 9 rebounds. Jason Bahillo was also strong in the low blocks with 8 points and 12 boards.
In the first game, scoring machine Joshua Sablan was on fire, torching the hoops with 36 points to lead 69ers I (8-3) to a 100-46 romp of Garapan Rollers III (1-10).
Sablan had just 14 points, as 69ers I took the half, 43-18. But the shooting guard would suddenly go berserk in the second half, pumping in 22 more points to lead the 69ers I to victory.
Shawn Fujihira supported Sablan’s big night with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Frank Blas added 10 points and 11 boards in the win. Twin brothers Nate and Dan Mateo led G-Rollers III with 10 and 8 points, respectively.
The 18-and-under league will have the make-up game between Ol’Aces and Makos tomorrow, Oct. 12, beginning at 5:30pm at the Ada Gym.
League coordinators have also set a meeting at 12noon tomorrow at the Ada Gym conference room. Representative of all teams are required to attend. Agenda for the meeting are the playoffs, and MVP and Mythical 5 selections.
