Basketball hogged sports headlines, as big games were decided in the hard courts of Saipan last week.

In the 2004 UFO-San Miguel Cup, defending champion Visminda-Country House gained twice-to-beat advantage in the finals after routing Cabalen-RP Construction last Sunday. A day earlier, three-time titlist SIP-Verizon booked a seat in the championship after laying waste to FASA-PABA-CNC Inc.

An overconfident Sixers I team, meanwhile, encountered rough sailing in the 2004 Saipan Rotary Club Summer Youth Basketball League Tuesday after Makos almost snapped their perfect run in the eliminations. San Antonio escaped by a whisker and claimed the pennant thanks to some timely 3-point hits and miscues by the sharks.

Country House, for its part, surprised pennant champion Capricciosa in Game 1 of their best-of-three title showdown in the 2004 Inter-Restaurant Basketball League last Tuesday. Banjo Basila lifted his team to victory with help from guard Edward Vega and power forward Joy Dayrit.

In other news, the Shell Chiefs bagged their second win in as many games in the 2004 Commonwealth Football League after pummeling Verizon Nitro last Oct. 2 at the CPA Airport Field.

The fall edition of the Saipan Major League also got going last Oct. 2 with the Pirates finally getting the better of defending champs Hustlers. The match between Kautz Glass and Northern Stars was postponed to a later date.

Saipan Swim Club’s Dean Palacios and Nina Mosley also joined swimming superstars in the 7th FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships last Friday. SSC coach Mike Stewart is accompanying the duo in Indiana.

Last week also saw action continue in the World Organized Rocball Interscholastic and Community League at the Marianas High School and the 6th Annual Miller 4-Person Beach Volleyball League at the Pacific Islands Club sand courts.
