Volunteers needed for Wing Beach cleanup
In celebration of Arbor Month and TREES’ second anniversary, members, families and friends are invited to a beautification activity at Wing Beach on Oct. 23.
“We will be clearing tangan tangan and planting indigenous trees at Wing Beach from 7am to 11:30am,” said Kathy Yuknavage, natural resources planner of the Coastal Resources Management.
Yuknavage said this is part of a much bigger interagency effort called the “Walk it, Don’t drive it” beach campaign, which aims to educate drivers about the impacts of beach driving, and prevent unauthorized vehicles from driving on the beach.
Wing Beach is considered a very important nesting site for the threatened Green Sea Turtle and was selected to kick off this phase of the campaign, which includes installing signage (purchase request is being processed), an emergency access gate for authorized vehicles (PR is being processed), and bollards, boulders and/or good sized trees to keep motorists in designated parking areas.
Two public forums have already been held and multiple meetings led to the decision to keep Wing Beach a “primitive” site. The beach will remain open year round to “foot” traffic, but cars will not be allowed access. The north parking area will remain grassy, although enlarged to centralize and accommodate more cars, making it easier for police to patrol for potential burglars. The other accesses will be completely blocked to vehicular traffic, leaving only walk paths for pedestrian traffic. No road expansion is to take place, but the road will be grated and pot holes filled.
“If you are interested in volunteering your time, please come by next Saturday. Be sure to bring, hats, work gloves, good shoes, sunscreen, and of course shovels, pick axes, machetes, and water to drink, should our refreshments run out,” Yuknavage said.

“I will be out of the office Oct. 8-15, but will contact you as soon as I’m back,” she said.
