Calvo gets backing to become the speaker of Youth Congress
Re-elected CNMI Youth Congress Sen. Roselle Calvo recently received yet another endorsement, this time, in support of her getting the Speakership position.
In a letter dated Oct. 5, 2004, former Youth Congress Speaker Angel Demapan officially endorsed Calvo’s pursuit of becoming speaker, citing her experiences and leadership skills, among others, as basis.
He said that based on his experience, the position requires “commitment, dedication and effective leadership.”
“The senator that shall fill the position must embody these qualities so as to ensure that pertinent issues affecting the welfare of our young citizens are in the hands of proven and responsible leadership,” he said. “Roselle’s record of achievements reflects her leadership ability and is fundamental proof that she has the necessary caliber to lead her colleagues and the youth of the Northern Marianas in the right direction.
Further, he encouraged the other senators-elect to “join hands in enhancing the lives of our youth by enabling effective legislation and initiating programs aimed at increasing youth awareness within our community.”
“Therefore, in order to sail in the direction of prosperity, the Speakership must be placed in the hands of a responsible leader and Roselle has all that to offer,” he said.
Demapan also recognized Calvo’s voluntary actions in assisting others within the comunity.
“At a very young age, Roselle enlisted the help of her sister to reach out to the community by offering services aimed at improving reading skills of struggling young children,” he said.
Calvo was recently re-elected to the Youth Congress. Prior to elections last month, she received other endorsements from professors at Yale University, where she took college courses as part of the annual Junior Statesman Summer School program.
She also chaired the Ways and Means Committee in the 6th Youth Congress.
