Pickup truck mows down two cyclists
Two persons on separate bicycles were rushed to the Commonwealth Health Center early Sunday morning after being hit by a pickup truck while traveling along Beach Road San Antonio.
According to Department of Public Safety public information officer PO2 Eric F. David, a call reporting the auto-bicycle crash was received at about 4:50am.
The victims, 22-year-old Wang Riqui and 23-year-old Yu Zhouyong, were admitted to the CHC. Riqui sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, while Zhouyong was listed in stable condition.
David said both victims were traveling south using the shoulder of the southbound lane by Pak Pak Beach when they were hit from behind by a black Toyota pickup truck.
Traffic preliminary investigation revealed that the pickup, operated by 20-year-old Santiago A. Castro, was also traveling along the southbound lane when it veered off the road and struck the bicyclists.
“The pickup truck fled the scene, but the operator later turned himself in to the DPS front desk,” David said.
Medics dispatched to the scene transported the two victims to the hospital.
David said the pickup driver was at fault. Alcohol was found to be a factor in the accident, and the operator was cited for reckless driving as well as driving under the influence.
He said Castro sustained no injuries and was booked and detained at the Adult Correctional Facility in Susupe.
