Continental highlights NMI in Taiwan briefing
The Marianas Visitors Authority recently participated in a Continental Airlines-sponsored press conference held in Taipei, Taiwan on Oct. 1, 2004. The MVA delegation included MVA board chair David Sablan and managing director Vicky Benavente.
A total of 30 representatives from various newspapers and magazines were present for the announcement of the scheduled launch of direct service from Taiwan to Saipan.
Media representatives included Taipei Times, Min Sheng Daily, Travel Trend News, China Daily News, World Travel Weekly, and TravelCom, to name a few.
“Diversifying our market share would enable the CNMI to build a stronger tourism industry. The CNMI needs to be able to accommodate a resurging market and support the efforts by Continental Airlines,” said Sablan.
The Northern Marianas has seen this market flourish in the early 90s with the first direct Continental flight service in 1992. With the service, the Northern Marianas welcomed more than 11,000 Taiwan visitors in 1992 and 1993. However, due to the termination of the direct service and the travel without U.S. visa regulation, the Northern Marianas has since then seen a steady decline in this market.
With the expected launch of Continental Airlines Taiwan/Saipan direct flights, the MVA is optimistic about seeing an increase with visitors from this market and the airlines.
“The MVA and its members will provide support to Continental’s new direct flights from Taipei to Saipan, with a partnership approach to marketing and PR activities,” said Benavente. “As a destination, the Marianas offers visitors from Taipei a relaxing beach resort atmosphere, fine dining, and exciting marine and outdoor sports activities.”
