August vehicle accidents decrease by 27.4 percent
Traffic related accidents in August 2004 decreased by 27.4 percent compared with the same period last year, according to the Department of Public Safety Traffic Section.
Some 193 auto accidents were recorded for August 2004, 73 less than the 266 in August 2003.
The number, however, is 183 percent more than the number of accidents reported for August in 2002, which posted 81.
Of the 193 incidents so far this year, 114 cases occurred on highways or secondary roads, while 79 occurred on driveways or parking lots.
Meanwhile, the Traffic Section also disclosed that the DPS has recorded 31 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Further, 25 DUI cases have been recorded for September 2004. The total number of accidents for the month has yet to be compiled.
Earlier, statistics provided by the Traffic Section indicated that a total of 1,662 auto-related crashes were reported between January and June of this year, an increase of 115 cases compared with that of last year, which had 1,547 accidents.
The section reported that 245 accidents occurred in January, 258 in February, 292 in March, 297 in April, 292 in May, and 272 in June. Aside from January’s number, all numbers surpass those recorded for the same period last year.
Last year, 286 accidents were reported in January, 229 in February, 263 in March, 243 in April, 264 in May, and 262 in June.
