The Filipino-American Tennis Association fulfilled its promise of donating 50 percent of proceeds from the 2004 Century Insurance Co. Tennis Classic to the sponsor’s charity of choice.

FILATA president Eli Buenaventura yesterday presented a $300 check to CIC general manager Nel Matanguihan at the CIC Centre in Garapan and said, “Our association is not in the business of generating profit from its tournaments, that’s why we are donating half of the proceeds back to our sponsor, who in turn will give the money to the charity of their choice.”

Matanguihan said he appreciates the gesture of FILATA and Buenaventura and said CIC will always be open to supporting community and sports events on the island. He said FILATA’s selfless donation should also serve as an example for all to follow.

“We thank FILATA and Eli [Buenaventura] for this kind donation. It makes it doubly worthwhile for our company to sponsor events like this knowing that a part of the proceeds will be appropriated to the community,” said Matanguihan.

Jack Muna, CIC new business development manager, said the company would likely earmark the donation for the 5th Annual Turnkey Koblerville Santa Mini Parade that would be held on Dec. 31, 2004.

Muna explained that the Turnkey Koblerville Santa Mini Parade is a small celebration he and his wife started some five years ago. He said it involves a live Santa Claus that gives out candies and other goodies to children in the neighborhood and fireworks being lit at the stroke of midnight to greet the New Year.

“This $300 donation will go a long way in making a lot of kids happy in Koblerville. Of course this donation will be made in the name of both CIC and FILATA, who was generous enough to share its profit with us,” he said.

Buenevantura also took the time to invite all tennis players on island to join the upcoming 2004 Shell Marianas-Telesource CNMI Tennis Open that will start next Monday, Oct. 11, at the American Memorial Park tennis courts.

He said categories that will be offered are doubles, singles, and mixed doubles. For more information about the tournament, please call Elmer Guzman at 483-2004 or Alex Martin at 322-1130.
