Tinian, GTC teams top divisions in DFS soccer
Tinian and Gregorio T. Camacho elementary schools finished atop their respective divisions in the boys preliminary round of the 2004 DFS Soccer Tournament held at the Garapan Elementary School field last Saturday.
Tinian took pole position in Group A after wins over Dandan, Koblerville, and Garapan I gave it 6 points.
The boys from the south defeated Dandan, 2-0, on goals by P.J. Cruz and E.J. Hofshneider. Tennis protégé Benji Decena then hooked up with Elmo Hofschneider, scoring two goals each in Tinian’s 2-0 victory over Koblerville.
In its final game of the day, Tinian made it three-for-three with a 2-1 beating of Garapan I.
Following Tinian in the standings are GES I (4 points), Dandan (2 points), and Koblerville with no points.
GTC held sway in Group B after finishing the preliminaries also with 6 points. David Jones first powered GTC to a 2-0 win over William S. Reyes with Jones getting the credit for the two goals. Jones and Ryan Camacho then both kicked the ball between the goal posts in GTC’s 2-0 licking of Garapan II.
The team then earned its third straight win with a 3-1 polishing of Kagman. Ben Lizama scored two goals in the contest, while Brandon Camacho scored the other one.
The rest of the standings in Group B saw WSR finishing second with 4 points, followed by GES II (2 points), and Kagman with zero points across its name.
Advancing to the championship round of the boys division are Tinian and GES I of Group A and GTC and WSR of Group B. All four teams will again hit the soccer field on Oct. 23 beginning at 8pm to determine the champion of the boys division.
Meanwhile, the preliminary round for the girls division of the DFS Soccer Tournament will be held this coming Saturday, Oct. 9, beginning at 8am also at the GES field.
