1,000 scholarship slots up for grabs

The Gates Millennium Scholars program has launched its 2005-2006 nomination process, giving a chance for CNMI students to be among the 1,000 recipients of the scholarship program.
General information on the program, as well as the nomination forms, can be found at https://www.gmsp.org. Materials may be submitted either on-line by Jan. 14, 2005 (12 midnight EST) or postmarked no later than Jan. 14, 2005.
Nominations and recommendations from relatives will not be accepted.
Students are eligible to be considered for a GMS scholarship if they:
* are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American;
* are a citizen/legal permanent resident or national of the United States;
* have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (un-weighted);
* will be entering a U.S. accredited college or university as full time, degree-seeking freshmen in the fall;
* have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities; and
* meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria (eligibility for Federal Pell Grant can only be determined through the submission of a Free Application for Federal Student Aid to the U.S. Department of Education, Federal Student Aid Programs).
Gates Millennium Scholars selects 1,000 students per year.
